Why Indoor Cats Need More Than a Scratching Post

A scratching post is useful, but it is only one part of a good indoor cat setup. Cats also need opportunities to move, observe, hide, chase, pounce, scratch, rest and make choices about their environment.

Indoor life can be safe and comfortable, but it can also become predictable. When every day looks the same, some cats lose interest in play or create their own entertainment. That might mean scratching the lounge, climbing somewhere inconvenient or ambushing your ankles like a tiny, judgemental assassin.

Good indoor enrichment gives cats more ways to behave like cats.

Start with vertical space. Many cats enjoy being up high, especially where they can watch the room or look out a window. Cat trees, shelves, window spots and raised beds can help create a richer environment without taking over the whole house.

Next, think about hiding and resting. Enclosed beds, tunnels, soft caves and quiet corners can help cats feel secure. Some cats like to be in the middle of the action. Others prefer to observe from a tasteful distance, like a furry aristocrat reviewing the staff.

Play matters too. Toys that move, flutter, roll or disappear around a corner can encourage hunting-style behaviour. Wand toys, interactive toys, puzzle feeders and smart toys can all help create variety. The key is to match the product to your cat’s confidence. A bold cat may enjoy movement and sound. A shy cat may prefer quieter, slower play.

Scratching is still important. Offer different textures, such as cardboard, sisal, carpet-style surfaces or angled scratchers. Some cats prefer vertical scratching, while others prefer horizontal scratching.

Food can also become enrichment. Puzzle feeders, treat toys and slow-feeding activities can make meals more interesting and encourage your cat to think, search and explore.
